Albert Bruce Sabin (SAY-bin; born Abram Saperstejn; August 26, – March 3, ) was a Polish-American medical researcher, best known for developing the oral polio vaccine, which has played a key role in nearly eradicating the disease.
In –72, he served as the president of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
Biography
Abram Saperstejn was born in Białystok, Russian Empire (before and since in Poland), to Polish-Jewish parents, Jacob Saperstejn and Tillie Krugman.[1] In ,[2] he emigrated with his family on the SS Lapland which sailed from Antwerp to the Port of New York.
