Echo of moscow funding sources

Last November, it looked like Russia was about to lose Echo of Moscow, one of the country’s longest lasting, most respected, and widely consumed news sources.

The outlet’s chief editor, Alexei Venediktov, was fighting for his job, following a scandal involving one of his reporters. For several days, there was a board meeting scheduled, where Venediktov was expected to get the boot, ending an entire era of Russian journalism.

The Echo of Moscow, for example, was reliant on its board of directors, which was appointed by Gazprom.

For a week, Russia’s opinion columns and social media overflowed with panegyrics to Venediktov’s courage, mourning the looming blow to Russia’s free press.

And then it happened. The Echo of Moscow Russians had come to know and cherish seemed to vanish.

Venediktov didn’t go anywhere, though.

And the radio station is still one of the few outlets in Russia where you’ll find reporting and analysis that’s sharply critical of the Kremlin. But Echo of Moscow has become Russia’s liberal radio station
